That has to be the lamest troll I've seen in a while.
Subtlety is the name of the game.
And crossposting to
sci.archaeology,alt.guitar.bass,rec.photo.equipment.35mm,alt.guitar,rec.photo.digital
is lame too.

Absolutely. No finesse in this troll at all.

It might have been better if it had been posted in alt.music.rush, and
crossposted into alt.music.kansas, With text like.

"Personally, I think Billy Greer from Kansas is a fantastic bass
player. He has strong chops and strong vocals. He's a lot better
than, say, Geddy Lee, who never can play the same thing twice and
sings like a girl.*"

But now, I warned alt.music.rush that a message like that would be a
troll, so don't do it there, either.

Oh, and there is no alt.music.kansas.

Trolls suck.

*disclaimer: not my opinion. I am a Geddy fan and have tremendous
respect. The above is simply an example of how to troll a fan
newsgroup.

I post at both and am not liked very well 8-)

Actually I co-Moderate the Bassists section and we lock/delete that kind
of crap when ever we see it. We get a lot of the "Bassist with the
biggest nose" "Bassist with the worst hair" etc.... people are pretty
funny.... there is even this one guy that's always takes shots of him
self playing random basses in his room and posts threads about it...

;)

It's not fair to pick Sid Vicious. They couldn't play and that was half the
point. It would be like telling a cubist that his portraits don't look very
realistic. The Worst should be someone who actually believed that they were
good.

I dunno, the guitarist for the Sex Pistols...compared to modern day
punk guitarists was by comparrison a virtuoso. He played some really
neat 50's guitar riffs. As for the rest of the band....well it is
punk.

Sorry, they *were* good. Only sad old hippies said they
couldn't play. Glen Matlock was the original bass player
and co-wrote 'Never mind the Bollocks', one of Britain's
finest albums which inspired *many* young bands.

All the 'hype' came fron Malc 'the Talc', the 'manager'.

Please don't argue !

well, you missed what was undoubtedly one of our worst gigs yet. Turns out you're supposed to

Yeah, Sid takes the biscuit for me. In the March edition of 'Guitar' there's
a short interview with biographer Alan Parker, who says that he did play on
'God save the Queen' and 'Pretty Vacant', but Steve Jones' bass track was
mixed over the top of Sid's.

I think you're all missing the point of why Sid was in the band. It was not
for his playing but for his attitude and Sid had plenty of attitude.

Anyway my vote goes to the kid in Busted who doesn't even pretend to play
half the time. (http://www.busted.com for those who haven't suffered Busted)
He probably wasn't hired for his bass plaing either.

I am in knowledge, that this is a troll.

However, it does deserve comment, for all the potential trolls, to be born of the wood work.

There is only one thing that is required to become a good musician. That, is the true awareness of
SELF, in the world of music.

Here is, as usual, this case in point, of a musician with a lack of awareness of self, and the
extreme awareness of others. Never once, looking into the mirror, to make proper
identification.... This, makes possible the, "legend in your own mind", syndrome.

It is with little wonder, without the aid of a mirror, this mindset allows the musicians to sit upon
the seat of judgment of all others, from the disconnected reality now established.

From this position comes all the CRAP, that is that of a music bigot, and music racist!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS, all seen from their mountain top, all the while, their musical audience is to THEM, unseen.

So, It Is With Their Mouth, They Speak!!!!!!!!

When they finally get around to the making of their music, their audience runs out of the club's
doors, to get away from the NOISE.

<thinking>

Talk to me not with your Mouth, but with your MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT, is all, the ears in the audience before you, want to HEAR, from you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, shut your mouth, and play your ass off!!!!!

Make the music, that people come from miles around, to HEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT, is the bottom line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mailing lists are worthless, when your music sucks.

Keith, I don't know what planet you're from but Rich certainly has his 2
feet on earth,
I've had exchanges with him for a couple of years now and have onle received
good advice from him in that time.
Sure, he's got a couple of rough edges but considering the help he's
provided me and others, that's quite excusable.
You'd gain a little more by putting the brain in listen mode before letting
nonsense like what you posted escape from your mouth.

Well, "overrated" and "worst" aren't necessarily the same thing. Plus, what
do you mean by "worst"--can't play (as in, no chops), or obnoxious or
unmusical? You might not like Geddy's playing, but he CAN play.

I think there are tons of lousy bass players in some of the heavier bands.
For example, many bad 80s metal bands had awful bass players. And a pick is
the 1st sign. I think I can count on 1 hand the number of bass players of
any consequence who use a pick--Paul McCartney topping the list.

Guitarists that switch over to bass, such as McCartney, often use a pick
when playing bass. Couple that with using a short scale bass and again you
see a pick in many instances.

I'll use anything that the sound requires, but I play using my fingers the
majority of the time.

I was going to nominate myself for this category, but even I have seen some
bass abusers worse than myself. Not many, but some.

Errr... ummmm...

Lemmy?
Carol Kaye played with a pick at least part of the time.
Gene Simmons may not be the technical wizard, but he probably influenced
alot of kids in the 70s. And there are some great bass lines on early
Kiss records.

Worst bass player?
Probably Sid Vicious. And he played with a pick as well.

John Paul Jones is one of the big class players I can think of who sometimes
plays with a pick. Heck, in his lessons, he even defends using a pick as a part
of the bass player's wide arsenal of sounds!

Cool! having multi decadigit fingers must have required the development
of a radical technique!

Can you cover the whole neck with your hand in one position?

That must make playing so much easier, especially the more esoteric
augmented chords.

Buying gloves could be a problem though.
