Hi --

I just wondered if anyone here used variants on the right hand technique
outlined on Gary Willis' site ?

A couple of questions; How long till you were able to play with it
approximately ? And how do you handle note per string stuff (for instance root
on E, 5 on A, octave on D played in various combinations in quick succession -
al la some early soul lines).

Regards,

He's pretty good at responding depending on his schedule.
E B E8va B vamp is open position so the fingering is 1 2 3 2
Or say the tune "Foot Prints" which is a cm triad
C G C Bb, fingering would be 1 2 3 2.
To get this technique down depends on a few things. One being how long
you've been playing with you other technique. If you have your old tech
really ingrained, it might take some time. But every one is different.
One being Gary Willis is left handed. I don't know if that makes a
differece but point being.

Hmmmmm....interesting. Now I have a excuse for his right hand technique being
so badass:-)

He plays Bass right handed though in all the pictures I've seen.

I think for fast passages he alternates plucking fingers, but otherwise uses
his thumb and three fingers to pluck, and the heel of his palm and his
pinkie to mute.

His site and Instructional Video explains his tech. well. For linear
passage, he uses 1 and 2 and the 3 finger stays on one string higher
which he basically plucks with (3) beginning with the first note
ascending. Descending he uses 1 and 2 exclusively.

He's left handed but plays righty. Steve Morse and John Patittuci are
also left handed but plays righty. I know 'cause I'm an autograph buff.
My brother's the same way. I had a student who played the bass holding
it lefty (Fretting with Left hand) but held a pen with right hand.

It's far more likely for a lefty to be ambidextrous.

Gary is way bad-ass for right-hand techniques.

Sure. My original question was how he damped when he played like this. I was
put off the video by Gary's comments on his website - though maybe i'll pick
it up anyway.

He says he doesn't like the video because there were some editing issues
he had no input over but he does say the video does a decent job
explaining his technique. I think it's a great video. Tunes like
"Renegade" and "Self Defense" are on it. Any way, he does explain his
right hand really well.
