I've played them in stores before. For a 6, I liked it. Never really
cared for 6's but it's a quality bass.

That's the followup to the John Patitucci signature bass, right? I tried
the TRB6JP (not 2) model because I really liked the looks of it + I had
seen someone gig with it and it sounded cool.

I did however find it really, really hard to play. Maybe it was due to
the 35" scale which i wasn't used to at the time + the neck is a
highway! It's really really wide. I'd recommend you to try before you
buy, beacuse I really liked it before I played it... but then found that
it was way too hard for me to play.

I recently bought a TRB 6P and wow, what a bass. There's a whole
orchestra
of tones right at your fingertips. Granted, the neck is a football
field but
at least the string-spacing isn't compromised. So far, I have used it
on 3
gigs (for the full night) and I've adjusted reasonably well. It's a
whole lotta
strings though!

I checked out the Yamaha site and there are some distinct differences
between
the model you're looking at and the TRB6P. Namely, the TRB6JP has a
35" scale vs. 34", you get the cutaway on the top of the body for
slapping, the pickups are Alnico V vs. Double-coil alnico but the
hardware, controls, fingerboard all look identical. I'm not sure about
the new TRB6JP but the older models were a bolt-on neck, whereas the
TRB6P is and has always been neck-through.

I've never been one for signature model instruments, however, if the
price is comparable and you dig the John Patitucci model, go for it! I
think these are some of the best factory-made high end basses
available today. Mine's a keeper.

Just in case, check out:

I've tried the original JP Yamaha and I think it smokes! The spacing feels
great for my plucking hand, but it's too wide for me to comfortably hold
down a groove on the low B string for an extended period.
I'd go for it if you can fret the low B 1st - 4th fret stuff comfortably.
