Hello, I recently acquired a used Swr Goliath Jr. III cabinet. It is
the 8 ohm version. Went to the Swr website to look up how many watts
it can handle and it says 350 for both the 4 ohm and 8ohm version. Is
this correct? I don't know much about ohms but I always thought that 8
ohm cabinets handle less watts than 4 ohm cabinets? Did Swr put
something special in the 8 ohm version to handle 350 watts like the 4
ohm version? I was thinking about buying a Gallien-Krueger 400RB IV
but if my cab can really handle 350 watts I would like to get the 700RB
II which pushes 320. Anyone have experience using these amps through
these cabs? Thanks for your help!

No, nothing special in either cabinet. It's just that they purchase their
speakers at both ratings so you can choose which one will most closely match
your needs.

"I always thought that 8 ohm cabinets handle less watts than 4 ohm cabinets"

No, a solid state *amp* will produce less power when driving an 8 Ohm load
than a 4 Ohm load.

Thanks guys for the quick answers. So, do you think the
Gallien-Krueger 700RB running 320 watts into 8 ohms would be a good
match for my cab?

Should sound sweet. That cabinet, though, could easily handle twice as
many watts. You can always just upgrade it by getting a power amp and
using the preamp section of the GK head (like I did).

Re the ratings of the speakers... Just open up the cabinet and look at
the ratings / product #s of the individual speakers to get an idea of
what's going on.

You're confusing the Goliath III with the Goliath III Jr., which is a
2x10" cab.

In this case you will earn nothing, as the OEM PAS drivers do not have
any markings that reveal anything to the end user.

If you want to determine impedance, you have to test DCR with a meter.

Measuring DCR for the entire cab through a speaker cable will reveal
net impedance, but the crossover circuit in the SWR pro amps adds
about an Ohm or so.

the impedance of a cab or speaker is unrelated to its power
handling capability.

I have the same cabinet and run it with a Hartke 7000 (350W per side). Sometimes I use a 70's Ampeg SVT which is only rated 300 Watts but seems much more powerful.

That cabinet sounds great and could take it all day long. It is so efficient that I rarely run it past 3.
