Hi there,

Yesterday evening, one of the powertubes in my SVT died, so i had to order a
new set.So i was wondering if anyone of you had already tried to figure out
if there is a tonal difference between 6550s and KT88s.

Thanks for you comments,

Philippe

How old is the amp?. Mines over 3 years old, and I've never had a
problem.Did you order all 6, or just 3? I think they are push-pull
aren't they? It wasn't a pre amp tube was it?

Well, mine's from january 2003, and it has worked fine unitl last sunday. I
ordered a set of 6, so i might have replacement tubes from the actual set. I
bet it's the output tubes, as the amps lacks power and the diodes on the
back indicate that there is a power amp problem.

Current production wise the line is really blurred. Electro-Harmonix
6550 and KT88 are the exact same tube relabeled. The Sovtek KT88 (my
favorite) and the reissue Tung Sol 6550 are the exact tube again,
relabeled... etc etc etc.

Hi,

Well, this sounds already interesting to me. I bought me tubes at
www.tubeampdoctor.com and the physical difference i can see is that the 6550
is in a straight glass tube and the KT88 is in a bulby one. This doesn't say
anything about the caracteristics, but it seems to be a definitely different
product.

Best regards,

Philippe

Sovtek KT88 http://www.tubedepot.com/so-kt88.html (my amp has 8 of them
in it)
Tung Sol 6550 http://www.tubedepot.com/ts-6550.html

I find the Sovtek KT88 very even across the spectrum... very 3D in it's
articulation. I play a 6 string and it's nice low to high. The slight
"looseness" to the very bottom that is mentioned in the reviews actually
work nicely for my overall bass tone... it's still tight and clear, but
almost like someone hit the 'deep' switch without actually hitting the
'deep' switch... if that makes sense.

but I also don't run an SVT... so YMMV

sleeper of a tube head, made for a real short while in the mid-late 90s
by Peavey. It's got 8x KT88/6550, 5x 12AX7 & 1x 12AT7... full dual
channel preamp section that is footswitched and can be combined... other
than being 100lbs by itself it is perfect for me in every way 8-)
